Flavius Aetius, sometimes referred to as the “last of the Romans”, was a Roman statesman and general in the first half of the 5th century CE. For two decades he held sway over the politics of the Western Roman Empire, even as it rapidly lost territory. He led a coalition of Romans, Visigoths, and other Germanic peoples at the Battle of the Catalaunian Plains, defeating Attila the Hun himself.
