The first emperor of Rome (31 BCE to 14 CE, though the starting point shifts) Caesar Augustus (born Gaius Octavius) organized the chaotic aftermath of the Roman civil wars of the first century BCE into a coherent state after his inheritance of his uncle Julius Caesar’s estate and eventual defeat of Antony and Cleopatra at Actium in 31 BCE. He passed laws to organize the provinces, cut the army in half, and conquered Egypt, the Alps, northern Spain, Galatia, and the Balkans. His rule initiates the Pax Romana, and the government he created would last almost three centuries.
