Third emperor of Rome (37 CE to 41 CE), he is most well known for his crazed reputation from historical biographers. His full name was Gaius Caesar Augustus Germanicus and he went by Gaius. The name Caligula (meaning “little boots”) was a childhood nickname. From ordering his soldiers to pick up shells on the English channel to “fight Poseidon”, to building a bridge of boats to cross the bay of Baiae, and possibly even making a horse a Senator, Caligula is infamous in the modern world. (Though these stories may or may not be true.) He was so disliked that he was assassinated by his disgruntled bodyguards in 41 CE.
