Carthage

Founded by the Phoenicians in the 9th century BCE, Carthage rose to become the pre-eminent city-state of the Wester Mediterranean until the rise of Rome. Controlling large swaths of North Africa, Hispania, Sicily, Corsica, and Sardinia, the Carthaginians thrived off of trade. Their armies were mostly paid mercenaries. After getting into a conflict with Rome in the 3rd century BCE, it was finally destroyed in 146 BCE, only to be rebuilt a century later, after which it became the fourth largest city of the Roman Empire. The city’s most famous son was Hannibal Barca.
