The fourth Roman emperor (41 CE to 54 CE), Tiberius Claudius Caesar Augustus Germanicus was hailed as emperor by the Praetorian Guard upon the assassination of Caligula. Known for having a stammer and a limp, Claudius is most remembered as a capable administrator, who peacefully brought several provinces into the empire. His most famous conquest though, was the violent invasion of Britannia, supposedly done to prove to his critics that he could conquer a province that Julius Caesar could not. He supposedly died of poisoning by his wife (and niece), Agrippina the Younger, who made way for her son Nero to become emperor.
