The first true pan-European culture, the Gauls (or Celts) spread from the Alps to include northern Spain, France, the Rhine and Danube river basins, central Turkey (Galatia), and Northern Italy. Their culture was slowly overtaken by the Romans and, eventually, the Germanic peoples.
