Emperor of the Western Roman Empire at the end of the 4th century and beginning of the 5th, his is considered the first reign of the permanently sundered Western Roman Empire. His reign saw territorial encroachment from the Visigoths, Franks, Burgundians, Vandals, and Suebi into Gaul, Hispania, and Africa. He relinquished Brittania to the Anglo-Saxons in 410 CE, while Rome itself was famously sacked by the Visigoths the same year.
