The period ranging from about the middle of the third century CE, when the Crisis of the Third Century hit the Roman Empire, all the way up to the Muslim conquest of Spain, effectively creating the status quo of the Middle Ages. This period is meant to show that the end of the ancient era was not an abrupt one, but a gradual transformation into the Midde Ages.
