The fifth and final emperor of the Julio-Claudian dynasty of the Roman Empire, Nero Claudius Caesar Augustus Germanicus (54 CE to 68 CE) is most remembered for his massive ego. The story of whether or not he fiddled while Rome burned has been debunked, but he used the great fire of Rome to build the Domus Aurea, which took up a full third of the city. Believe himself a great actor and musician, Nero executed those who dared speak ill of him, even having his own mother put to death. He later committed suicide when the civil and military wings of the empire revolted against him, supposedly saying “What an artist dies in me.”
