The final war between Carthage and Rome wasn’t really a war at all, so much as an invasion by Rome of Carthage. The Romans had been hoping to finally wipe Carthage off the face of the map after the end of the Second Punic War. Goading the Carthaginians to break their treaty (by raising an army to defend themselves after the Roman-allied Numidians began to invade), the Romans immediately declared war and laid siege to the city for three years. By the end, the entire city was leveled and its population either sold into slavery or killed. The city would be refounded 100 years later under Julius and Augustus Caesar, after which it became the fourth largest city of the Roman Empire.
